I’m taken back to the Middle Ages, which for me was 6th grade. Prior to the Medieval Banquet and learning to dance with a boy who may or may not wear deodorant depending on the day, there was peace among the lands of my mind. Mrs. Buck had sewn seeds of medieval magic and my thirst for knowledge could hardly be quenched.

This project was everything. For weeks it consumed my entire existence as I toiled in every after school hour to produce my own imaginings of medieval times. It was all-consuming, so much so that we were even given a “new name”, which we got to choose. I chose “Amy” because I was told it meant “love”, and that name belonged to a friend of mine whom I adored. My name tag on my desk reflected this new identity, and I embraced it, diving headfirst into the project of all projects.

And there among the tales of serfs, Black Death masks, and castle blueprints, there was love, and I was happy.
