Monthly Muses: A Year of Female Artists Who Are Defining My Year
*according to my recent listens ;)
I’ve never lost my love of music. That’s something that’s never left me. There is music for every thought, every emotion, and every artist’s heart. I’m more into my obsession than ever and even created a Pinterest board for Indie & Girl Power Playlists.
Music is the fiber of my being. It carries me throughout time and holds me in each season. I often highlight songs within my essays that carry deep meaning for me. Perhaps the most in depth I’ve gone is in my divorce post from just over a year ago. Now, I often share my multi-faceted-incredibly-speccific-playlists on my Instagram stories but I don’t usually write it out. Yet, creating playlists is one of my favorite hobbies, so please enjoy with me my first Substack playlist feature as I direct the sympony that is: Months of the year as told by women artists according to my recent listens.
Lfg.
JANUARY: Lucy Dacus
Slow, somber, dark, icy beauty. Lucy Dacus is our January snow queen bringing softness and glimmers of hope in the new year.
FEBRUARY: Caroline Polacheck
Birds calling from the sky, Caroline swoops in and brings us into the season when Everything Is So Romantic. February is the month of daydreaming to her wild calls.
MARCH: Kate Bush
We’re marching with everything we have as change is brewing. It’s the calm before the storm and Kate Bush’s dramatic, haunting voice leads us through the darkest of times.
APRIL: Japanese Breakfast
Just when the dawn breaks, April blooms bring new love, ripening hope, and warm hearts. The Sweet sounds of Japanese Breakfast rise with the morning sun.
MAY: Magdalena Bay
Things are heating up around here and it’s pure energy. Oh my god, summer’s almost here. Magdalena Bay pulses through my veins.
JUNE: SZA
We’re breaking a sweat now. It’s hot, sexy, summer time. SZA’s got the vibes covered for that “Have a great summer” wish from your crush in your yearbook.
JULY: Alvvays
It’s the second best time of the year to break up (the first being when you know you want to). July is an upbeat breakup song, hanging onto long summer days and careless decisions. The future is always there.
AUGUST: Maggie Rogers
Now we’re in the dog days of summer, windows down in the car, driving up the canyon to catch some cool air. Maggie Rogers reminds you that although the seasons are starting to shift, summer whispers “Don’t Forget Me”.
SEPTEMBER: Olivia Dean
There’s a soft romance of falling into September, as soft as Olivia Dean’s long slip dresses. It’s a month made to make you smile complete with golden branches turning all around.
OCTOBER: Ethel Can
The mood sets in as the sunlight dims. Ethel Cain’s haunting anthems are October to the core as things start to slow down again, giving you time to pause for existentialism.
NOVEMBER: Lizzy McAlpine
One last trip To The Mountains before settling in for the winter. November is quiet, gentle, and full of gratitude. Lizzy’s songs fill my cup.
DECEMBER: Billie Eilish
It’s a deep, cold, Blue December. It’s time for sinking into winter rituals and seeking somber moments of reflection. Billie’s angelic voice is something holy.

Dude, did you read my mind!? I love this! And I'm also in the process of writing a piece about a death/dying life/living playlist! Crazy the universe gave us that shared idea?!
